Wonderfully elegant and graphic carved and worn Songye Female Mask with striated surface.
The female masks are restrained in comparison with the over exaggerated features of male Songye masks. Their function was to awaken and honor benevolent spirits
The Songye are well-known wood carvers who are renowned for making ceremonial masks.
